I came across this story and thought it wise to share. A pastor was entertained on one occasion in the home of a wealthy oil man in Texas. After the dinner, the man took the pastor up to the roof of his house and indicated huge field of oil Derricks and said; “Pastor, that is all mine. I came to this country 25 years ago penniless and now I own everything as far as you can see in that direction”. Then, he turned to the opposite direction and pointed to the fields of grain and said again; “It is all mine. I own everything as far as you can see in that direction”. Then, he turned to the east and pointed to the huge herds of cattle and said again; “It is all mine”. Lastly, he turned towards the west and pointed to great virgin forest and said; “It is all mine. Twenty five years ago I was penniless but I worked hard and saved and today I own everything as far as you can see in this direction”. He paused for the expected praise from the pastor but to his astonishment, it didn’t come. The pastor laid a hand lovingly on his shoulder, pointed upward and said; “My friend, how much do you own in that direction? The man dropped his head in shame and said; “I never thought of that”.
Sadly, many of us are not different from this character. We are busy calculating and storing up wealth and properties for the future against rainy days at the expense of Heavenly riches. Shockingly, only few are concern about Heavenly riches. Matthew 6vs19-21 warns against laying up treasures on earth in exchange for imperishable riches in the upward direction. It is not a sin to acquire life necessities but not at the expense of your Heavenly riches.
Now, ask yourself; “How much do I own in that upward direction”? It is never too late to do something while there is still life in you and be reminded again that Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth and the Life: no one goes to God except through Him – John 14vs6.
