What must I do to receive eternal life? This was a question a rich man asked Jesus Christ. In response, he was asked if he had kept the commandments and he replied in the positive affirmative. Then, Jesus Christ told him that he should go and sell all he had and give it to the poor if truly he wanted to have eternal life. This instruction seemed to be mission impossible for the rich man to embark on as gloom spread over his face and he walked away sadly. After this, He told His disciples that it’s easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for rich men to enter God’s kingdom.
Just like this rich man, many of us are unwilling to give up all it takes to possess the Kingdom of God. Here, the rich man’s god was his possession. Yours could be your career, family, job, power, ambition, addiction or your possession as well. These are the things we make idols in our heart – making them to take the place of God in our hearts. It’s not just for the rich man, many who are not rich also fall victim here too, prioritizing these in the place of God in their hearts.
Please, do not displace God with other gods in your life because if you do, you will certainly not have a part with Him here and hereafter. Therefore, let God maintain His position in your life and keep your focus on this same Jesus Christ who is the Way, the Truth and the Life: that no one goes to God except through Him.
